Fire-Rescue Med 2010 just wrapped up and was another successful event. The sessions provided great information on the current issues facing the EMS industry, the speakers were outstanding, and there were rave reviews from those attending for the first time as well as returning attendees.

Listen to these two new podcasts:

  •  Big Picture EMS Issues- Chief John Sinclair sat down with IAFC President and Chairman of the Board, Jeff Johnson, for a high-level discussion on current EMS issues.
  • Surviving the Economic Storm- Mary Beth Michos, Deputy Executive Director of the IAFC, talked with Chief Rob Brown, and Chief Al Gillespie on the economic issues facing fire and EMS departments.

FRM 2010 is just around the corner! Attendance is looking good, our expo hall is full of outstanding companies and we are very excited about the presenters lined up for this year’s conference.

This month’s Fully Involved podcast focuses on the recent Firefighter Safety and Resource Deployment Study. Grant funding made is possible for several organizations to team up in an effort to establish a technical basis for risk evaluation and deployment of resources. The results will help leaders assess risks in their communities, plan for adequate resource deployment, and measure the effectiveness of their response. To hear more check out this podcast:

The world has been stunned time and time again by acts of terrorism, Mr. John Giduck, has done extensive work in this arena and will be sharing his valuable experiences with Fire-Rescue Med attendees.

His presentation, Leading During Crisis of Terrorism: Lessons from Mumbai, Beslan and Virginia Tech, will detail the events of these attacks and what can be learned from each experience. The takeaways from this presentation will help today’s leaders prepare themselves should they ever be faced with a crisis situation.

John is a consultant with Archangel Group, who provides anti-terror consulting, international security assessments, K&R hostage negotiation training and other anti-terror services. Hear about the work they do, John’s role, and what he has learned from the research he has done.

Presenter Spotlight: Bruce Evans

Bruce Evans is currently the Assistant Chief of Business and Support Services at the North Las Vegas Fire Department in Southern Nevada.  He started his career at West Des Moines EMS in Iowa before taking a job for Mercy Ambulance in Las Vegas and subsequently moving on to the Henderson Fire Department.  An accomplished writer with text in EMS Management, Crew Resources Management and a bi-monthly column on EMS in Fire Chief Magazine.

Chief Evans session, Fire Service 2.0: The Road Ahead, teaches participants the power of data to defend against the budget crisis currently being experienced by most agencies. This session will look at the future of the fire based EMS and what is driving the changes. Plus, attendees will learn alternative models of funding justification to help during these difficult times.

Todd J. LeDuc, MS, CFO, CEM, is the deputy chief of department for Broward (FL) Sheriff Fire Rescue a career metro department of nearly 600 members. Chief LeDuc has been with Broward for the past 20 years and in the service for the 24 years. Chief LeDuc was charter president for the National EMS Quality Association and has been an advocate for high performance EMS systems. He has worked with agencies in over a dozen states in strengthing performance and leadership systems for success and speaks and publishes frequently on fire services issues of safety and leadership.

Chief LeDuc’s topics will include how to market your department for success, learn from lessons of successful private sectors (do’s and don’t) and how to learn to read the lay of the land to assure your personal and organizations success! Marketing your department and its services are critical now more than ever as department budgets are under intense scrutiny. Learn how to implement easy take away strategies to assure your department and its mission is out in front of the public and elected officials. In Chief LeDuc’s lessons of private sector, you will learn how to measure outcomes for success and identify key processes that should be tracked to demonstrate how quality improvement can be applied to the fire service. This is especially important as fire departments are being asked to justify why resources are needed and to demonstrate meaningful outcomes. Finally, Chief LeDuc will present ” How to Read the Tea Leaves” which is a critical look at the role of situational awareness in the fire services. Participants will learn how situational awareness is developed and why it is a matter of life and death.
